In 2014, a young mother and law student named Whitney Matney was looking to hire a nanny to help care for her 1-year-old daughter, Raylee. She ended up giving the job to a former high school classmate who came with solid references.

Whitney thought she could trust this woman, but she was about to find out she’d hired a “nightmare nanny.”

A few weeks after hiring the nanny, Whitney and her husband Chris noticed Raylee’s behavior was markedly different. Whenever the nanny showed up, Raylee would run to Whitney and Chris and hide behind them.

Whitney decided to purchase a nanny cam and set it up in the living room.

The first night she left the sitter alone with Raylee, Whitney came home and noticed the camera facing the wall. It was an immediate red flag — and then she saw the horrifying footage.

The nanny was caught on camera spanking and violently shaking Raylee before noticing the nanny cam, staring into the lens and turning it toward the wall. “You see these horror stories on TV and it’s a surreal feeling when it happens to you,” Whitney told ABC.

She and Chris immediately called the police and the sitter was arrested that evening.

Whitney is currently working to create a public child-abuse registry.
