Witnessing a child endure the suffering of illness is one of the most heart-wrenching experiences. It strikes at the core of our humanity to see young and innocent souls burdened with conditions that can challenge even the strongest adults. Chelsea Hughes, a mother from Kentucky, is intimately familiar with this anguish. At a mere 4 months old, Chelsea’s baby girl, Molly, received a diagnosis of stage 4 neuroblastoma.

The news left Chelsea and her family devastated, harboring fears that their once-smiling baby might not reach the age of two. Although neuroblastoma, a cancer that develops in the nerve tissue of young children, boasts a survival rate of 90 to 95 percent in most cases, the more aggressive forms of the disease present survival rates as low as 40 to 50 percent.

Against formidable odds, Molly demonstrated remarkable resilience. Enduring a total of 130 days in the hospital, enduring rigorous sessions of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, Molly’s tenacity prevailed as doctors discovered that her cancer was now in remission.

Chelsea disseminated the uplifting news to her Facebook followers, and the positive prognosis for the toddler quickly gained widespread attention. Over the course of 15 months of treatment, Chelsea consistently kept friends and family updated on her daughter’s neuroblastoma journey, utilizing the hashtag #MollyStrong.
