Medical Professionals Express Concerns Over Amy Schumer’s Health Following TV Appearance Showing Swollen Face

Amy Schumer, the 42-year-old star of “Life & Beth,” raised concerns among medical experts after her recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where her face appeared noticeably swollen and puffy. Following her segment, a clip of Schumer discussing her admiration for Taylor Swift and Beyoncé circulated on TikTok and Twitter, formerly known as X, prompting doctors to inquire publicly about the cause behind Schumer’s altered facial appearance.

Doctors and observers swiftly speculated that Amy might be using steroids such as prednisone and dexamethasone, commonly prescribed for inflammation treatment.

Additionally, medical experts proposed the possibility of Amy having an autoimmune disorder like lupus or a hormone imbalance, both of which can result in facial swelling.

Amy has been transparent about her battles with endometriosis, chronic pain, and Lyme disease in the past, all conditions that could necessitate steroid usage and facial swelling.

Furthermore, the actor has acknowledged previous use of cheek fillers, a procedure notorious for causing puffiness if not administered properly.

Dr. Jebra Faushay, a gender studies academic, posted on X, previously known as Twitter: “I’m going to need all surgeons and doctors to weigh in here. Serious question, what happened to Amy’s face? Is it normally this size?”

Sarah Absher, a registered nurse, responded: “Honestly, it looks like what is referred to as ‘moon face,’ a condition associated with long-term steroid use.”

Users specifically mentioned steroids like prednisone and dexamethasone, commonly used for inflammatory conditions such as asthma, allergic reactions, inflammatory bowel disease, and migraines. These medications differ from anabolic steroids, which are used to enhance athletic performance by increasing testosterone levels.

“Moon face” is a well-known side effect, characterized by round, full, and puffy facial appearance.

While medications like prednisone are typically prescribed for short durations due to the risk of adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s Disease) from long-term use, Lisa Clark, a nurse in Miami, suggested that Amy’s swelling could also be due to a cortisol imbalance.

Even in the absence of steroid use, cortisol imbalances can occur due to factors such as stress or tumors affecting the adrenal glands or the pituitary gland in the brain.

“I’ve also seen similar effects in lupus,” Ms. Clark added, noting that without further details about Amy’s medical history, it’s challenging to determine the exact cause.

In 2021, Amy posted a photo of herself inside of what appeared to be a doctor's office getting her face filler dissolved

Lupus, classified as an autoimmune disease, manifests when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues and organs. According to the Mayo Clinic, its symptoms encompass fatigue, fever, joint pain, swelling, a distinctive butterfly-shaped rash on the face, skin lesions, shortness of breath, chest pain, and dry eyes. Prednisone is frequently prescribed to alleviate lupus symptoms.

Moreover, some X users suggested that Amy might be dealing with Cushing syndrome, a condition characterized by excessive cortisol production by the body. This surplus cortisol leads to widespread weight gain, including facial swelling, as well as acne and delayed wound healing.

Beyond the speculation on social media, Amy has been candid about her battles with various health issues. In 2022, she shared her struggle with endometriosis, a condition marked by the growth of tissue outside the uterus, which can lead to severe pain and heavy bleeding, particularly during menstrual cycles.

During a CBS News interview, Amy described endometriosis as a “lonely, lonely disease.”

Many endometriosis patients resort to medications like progestins to regulate their reproductive hormones. Mount Sinai notes that such medications can induce water retention, leading to facial swelling.

In 2020, Amy disclosed her diagnosis of Lyme disease, which is transmitted by black-legged ticks carrying Borrelia burgdorferi or, less commonly, Borrelia mayonii. Common symptoms, per the Mayo Clinic, include a bullseye-shaped rash, fever, headache, extreme fatigue, joint stiffness, and muscle aches and pains. Swollen lymph nodes, characteristic of Lyme disease, can also contribute to puffy cheeks.

In 2021, Amy discussed her experience with facial fillers, cosmetic injections aimed at smoothing lines and wrinkles. Facial swelling is a common side effect of such procedures, and although Amy mentioned having the fillers dissolved, there’s a possibility she may have undergone similar treatments again.

Despite some trolls ridiculing Amy, other fans expressed support and well wishes. JC urged kindness, emphasizing the need to refrain from unnecessary speculation about others’ health. Dr. Tatiana Prowell, an oncologist from Maryland, condemned the normalization of commenting on women’s bodies and faces. She advocated for ending the practice of inviting speculation about people’s diagnoses without knowing their medical history and discouraging trolls from engaging in fat-shaming. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn echoed similar sentiments, urging people to refrain from judging others’ physical appearances and emphasizing the potential hurtfulness of such comments, especially when unaware of the individual’s circumstances.
