In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, the family of an elderly Florida resident grew concerned when they couldn’t reach her.
Claire Olsen, 87, was M.I.A for a couple of days, and her family in Nebraska wasn’t able to get the police department or fire department to help them make sure she was safe.
Finally, Claire’s grandson Eric came up with a brilliant idea. He called a Papa John’s pizza shop near his grandmother’s house and asked the staff to deliver a pizza to her — and to also check up on her to see if she was okay.
Claire’s grandson could tell over the phone that Papa John’s staff was immediately concerned about Claire, despite the fact they didn’t know her or the Olsen family. The delivery driver, Tyler, made sure to follow her grandson’s specific requests and happily used his own cell phone to call Eric in Nebraska when he arrived at her door.
Claire opened the door and told Tyler she didn’t order a pizza. “Your grandson did,” Tyler told her. She was stunned that her family went out of their way to make sure she was safe… and luckily, she was. And as it turned out, Claire’s family hadn’t heard from her because the hurricane wiped out her phone line.
“Police and fire couldn’t do it, but Papa John’s got there in 30 minutes and put the cellphone to her ear,” Eric says.
Tyler says the experience of helping Claire and her family “was better than any tip he has ever received.”
