Thommy Ten and Amelie Van are professional mentalists and performers who go by the name of the Clairvoyants. In 2015, the duo won the World Champions of Mentalism award. This year, they’ve taken the world by storm with their jaw-dropping run on America’s Got Talent. They’re still in the running to take home the Season 11 crown.
The Clairvoyants recently returned to next round of the competition, this time with a brand-new routine. They promised to “control the judges’ minds” and began by telling each of the judges to randomly select a jelly bean to eat.
With her back turned toward the audience, Amelie guesses that Heidi Klum picked a pink jelly bean. Then, she somehow guesses that Mel B scoops 22 jelly beans from the bowl. But the best part comes with their final trick, when they pull the curtain off the mysterious chalkboard that’s been sitting onstage from the very beginning. I won’t give it away, because it’s simply too incredible. I was definitely left scratching my head.
Simon’s reaction is perhaps the most surprising. “You are aliens from another planet because this is more than magic,” he says. “This is the creepiest thing, genuinely, I’ve ever seen in my life. But it’s so creepy, I absolutely love it. I feel like I’ve been haunted. Every time I think it can’t get any weirder, it does. I think you two are incredible.”
How do you think the Clairvoyants pulled this off? Is it just sheer mind reading, or is there something else going on behind the scenes?
