Fishing is one of those sports where patience is truly a virtue; and for a boy in South Carolina, the payoff was perhaps even bigger than he could have anticipated.
Brodie Brooks is only 11-years old, but fishing has been a long standing passion. Recently while out on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina, he was hoping to catch a big one when his rod starting bobbing up and down vigorously. Brodie remembers being excited, wondering what could possibly be at the end of his hook.
After struggling a little to pull in the line, which felt close to snapping due to the weight, the moment came when the catch emerged from the water.
Ben Myers, who was with Brodie at the time, remembers the moment clearly. Needless to say he was quite surprised at what this young fisherman had pulled out:
“I’ve been fishing on this lake all my life and that’s the first time I saw something be caught like this on a rod and reel … I told him, ‘You ain’t got no fish, you got a treasure’.”
The treasure that Ben speaks of was in fact a women’s purse, withered and battered from being submerged in the lake waters for perhaps too long! When Brodie and Ben unzipped it, what came out of it was one of the best kept time capsules one can imagine.
Various credit cards and pictures inside revealed that the purse belonged to an April Bolt. Not only was catching the purse a surprise, but when he showed his family the woman’s ID, it turned out they were old family friends! After inspecting the brand names and other dated objects included as part of the bounty, it was clear that April had parted with this purse unintentionally a long time ago. Just how long ago you ask?
April clearly remembers the day the purse went missing 25 years ago. It was in 1992, and she had attended a family cook-out at a nearby marina. When she heard the news that it was found after such a long time, she was ecstatic and in disbelief:
“I couldn’t believe it. I was lost for words … It meant the world to me. My son is 26 now, but he was 15 months then and I had all his photos that were professionally taken in my wallet. Back then you didn’t have your cellphone with the pictures. They have water damage but you can make him out.”
As April sifts through the contents of her long lost bag, she laughs remembering being sad about losing some other things as well:
“I remember being upset because my favorite lipstick was in there and the color was discontinued. I also had this comb with a pick on the end of it. My daughter is a hairdresser and when she saw it, she was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.'”
In hindsight, April clearly had gotten over the loss of her lipstick and comb easily, but back then the loss seemed very devastating:
“I was crying … It wasn’t a whole lot of cash — maybe like $60. But a woman fits her whole life in her purse.”
Here is April, 49-years-old now, talking about the excitement of Brodie’s catch!
For Brodie, it may very well be impossible to top such a catch! It was no big fish, but who can deny just how cool it is to find a lost treasure from so many years ago! Not to mention the double surprise of personally knowing the long lost owner!
For April too, the memories seemed to have flooded back in no time. This was definitely one fishing experience that no one will ever forget!
