The adage “better safe than sorry” has proven itself true time and time again, and most of us already have an emergency preparedness plan in place. For those who want to take their disaster response kits to the next level, the HouseholdHacker has a few tricks up his sleeves.

According to Ready, an emergency preparedness PSA campaign from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the three crucial steps we should all take before disaster strikes are to: “(1) build an emergency supply kit, (2) make a family emergency plan and (3) be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.” This three-pronged plan is designed to encourage families to be proactive in learning about what protective measures to take based on location and type of disaster (natural or man-made); in establishing where to meet and how to communicate with loved ones during such an event; and in packing sufficient supplies (including a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, medication, etc.), clean water, and food in survival kits. For more details, be sure to visit the Ready  website.

Once your emergency survival plan is firmly in place, there are a few additional items you could include as reinforcements. That way, if you run out of some supplies or need to improvise, you have something on which to fall back. The informative video below lists seven tricks that could save you in a pinch, and, best of all, these life hacks use objects that you probably already have in your home. For example, if you run out of clean drinking water, the HouseholdHacker has an ingenious solution that requires minimal supplies. Likewise, if you have trouble starting a fire or cooking food, his hacks may come to your rescue. Who knew that a soda can, aluminum foil, and an empty egg carton had this much potential?
While we hope that you never actually have to use these tips in a life-or-death disaster situation, they’re good to know just in case. Watch the video below to learn these creative hacks, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments section. Have you ever tried any of these before?
