You’ve probably heard the saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Well, give Jon Peters a piece of beat-up old furniture and he’ll surely turn it into treasure. Peters is a veteran in the art and design world and is a true master of the craft.

Peters began his journey at Ramapo College of New Jersey some 20 years ago, hiswebsite notes. While he worked toward his degree, he was an apprentice for a “furniture designer/builder.” Peters also attended classes at the Parsons School of Design in New York City before starting his own company in 1994. He primarily designed furniture and created art for his East Coast clients.

In 1999, Peters and his wife Laurel Bissonette opened an art gallery in Red Bank, N.J. The Laurel Tracey Gallery has featured the work of several notable artists. On Peters’ Facebook page, he says the gallery “specializes in contemporary American art, hand-made furniture and solid wood frame design.”

In a YouTube video uploaded to Peters’ channel back in August of 2011, the craftsman took an old mahogany desk, sporting scratches and stains, and breathed new life into it. Now don’t get us wrong, the desk had a nice vintage look to it, but once Peters begins the transformation, you won’t want to look back.

Peters’ process is relatively simple. If you’ve ever wondered how to refinish wood furniture, pay close attention. After removing the drawers from the desk, Peters applies Zip-Strip (paint remover) to the top so he can more easily strip the wood. Then he sands it down before beginning the staining process.

Curious about how to stain wood furniture? Or interested in restoring old furniture? Give Peters’ video a spin below and watch the craftsman go to work.
