In the French countryside, the Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers, a centuries-old castle, lays abandoned. The castle was built in the 13th century, and has passed through several owners throughout history. However, a fire in the 1930s caused massive damage to much of the castle, causing it to remain abandoned.

According to some users on the UK-based forum Derelict Places, the castle is in rough shape. One user, Infraredd, travelled to the castle and documented his trip.

“The first time I discovered it was surrounded by a moat and not accessible,” Infraredd wrote on the forum. During a return trip, he gained access into the castle walls. “The castle now remains in ruins. Only the chapel behind the castle was spared and is still in reasonable condition.”

Video footage of the castle taken with drone cameras corroborates Infraredd’s claims. An entire staircase has been destroyed inside the castle, and most of the building has fallen into disrepair, save for the chapel — a building that remains remarkably untouched.

A page dedicated to restoring the Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers has accumulated nearly 2500 members on Facebook.
