Anthony Howe is a kinetic sculptor from Orcas Island, Wash. with a singular mission: “to cause people to stop whatever thought process they have in their head and, just for a moment, experience a different kind of reality.”
One look at his mesmerizing masterpieces blowing in the wind and it’s clear that Howe has accomplished his goal. His art is quite simply magnificent.
In a video published to Great Big Story’s Facebook page on Feb. 29, Howe describes his business as independently-owned, run for over 30 years alongside his wife without the help of any galleries or agents. Howe also explains that his sculptures can cost anywhere from $40,000 – $400,000 – depending on their size.
Howe’s website describes his sculpting process as “the intersection of artistic inspiration and mechanical complexity.” He adds that he intends his sculptures to engage the brain with their intricate moving parts, while also being able “to weather winds of 90 mph and still move in a one mile per hour breeze and do so for hundreds of years.”
Talk about an art-form with a lot of moving parts. Literally.
