In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, Celine Dion took to the AMAs stage on Sunday night to pay tribute to the City of Light. Dion, a native French-speaker from Québec, sung an emotional rendition of Édith Piaf’s classic, “Hymne à L’Amour.” Accompanied by moving images of Paris’ most famous landmarks as well as photos of mourners honoring the fallen, the performance left very few dry eyes in the audience.

Translated, “Hymne à L’Amour” means “Hymn to Love,” and ends with poignant lyrics that state, “Eternity will be ours in the blue of all immensity / In the skies, no more problems / My love, do you believe we love each other? God reunites those who love each other.” Such a fitting message for the people of Paris, who have endured unimaginable loss, yet continue to look forward with love, hope, and flowers.

Flowers, like the ones adorning Dion’s gown during the performance, have emerged as a symbol of peace in the days since the terrorist attacks. Just last week a video went viral depicting a French father explaining the attacks to his son, reassuring the little boy that flowers and candles protect them from the “bad guys” with guns.
