Couple See Officer Stood In Middle Of Road In Pouring Rain, As They Get Closer, The Reason Becomes Clear

Earlier this week, Carolyn B. R. Hammett and her husband were driving near their home in Greenbelt, Maryland. It was a very stormy afternoon when the spotted something peculiar in the distance.

Standing there in the middle of the road was a police officer who was soaked from head to toe. Though she was drenched, she seemed to be smiling

Carolyn was confused at first. She thought that maybe the road must be flooded which is why an officer was on patrol, but that wasn’t the case at all.

“As we got closer, we realized that she was standing over something,”

As Carolyn and her husband got closer, they realised the officer was standing over a snapping turtle who foolishly decided to have a nap in the middle of the road. Due to the poor visibility that day, the animal could easily be crushed by a car. Thankfully, this selfless protector was here to keep it safe.

The officer was part of a snapping turtle rescue

“I couldn’t believe that she was standing there guarding that turtle in all that rain. Not many people would do that, regardless of their occupation. She was serving and protecting in every sense of the word.”

Hammett and her husband decided to pull over. Carolyn’s husband got out of the car to stand with an umbrella over the police officer to keep her sheltered from the heavy rain.

As it happens, the officer had been on her way home from a ceremony when she was alerted to the animal’s situation. Snapping turtles can be dangerous to handle, so the officer had decided to stand on guard while she waited for animal rescue to show up.

Rather than making the officer wait longer, Carolyn hurried home to retrieve two shovels which she and her husband used to lift the turtle safely off the road.

while the rescued turtle should be the most grateful, the officer seemed very thankful to the pair for helping.

“The officer thanked us and we thanked her and we all went on our way. She was smiling a big broad smile the entire time and she never seemed to care that she was drenched completely through. She was delightful, inspirational, kind, all the things that you think a police officer should be.”

The officer, Sharnise Hawkins-Graham is known in her community for her kindness and dedication to the job. Last October Sharnise was named the Greenbelt Police Officer of the Year. This title is definitely deserved, she aims to inspire others along the way.
