Couple Kristi Warriner and Justin Nelson got married Tuesday, November 11, 2014, next to their infant son JJ, who was receiving treatment for chronic lung disease at Cook Children’s Medical Center. NBC 5 of Dallas-Fort Worth area and ABC 7 reported that JJ was in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit after being born at around 1 pound in September. Since then, he’s been struggling to get healthy and well again.

The engaged couple would have needed to wait over a month for a traditional wedding outside of the hospital, reports NBC 5. Instead, they decided to have their special wedding right next to JJ in the hospital. The timing of the ceremony was especially important to the couple given that JJ’s twin brother was stillborn and that the couple wanted to ensure both JJ and Warriner’s 8-year-old daughter could attend the wedding.

“Our mission behind all [of] this was to hopefully let others [know] that … they are not alone,” Warriner tells local news outlets. “We are stronger than we ever were,” she says to ABC 7.
