I’ve had gray hairs since I was in my early 30s. When I started complaining, my mother, who had a full head of gray hair, told me to embrace the change. She said it was another milestone in my life, and one I should be proud of.
There’s nothing wrong with having gray hair, but the thing is, I love my natural hair color. I mean, if my hair was blonde, it wouldn’t be a stark contrast beside my black curls and I wouldn’t consider dying it so much.
After years of dying my hair with harsh chemicals (and spending a lot of money on expensive hair dye products), my hair started to feel extremely brittle. The hair follicles were weakened and my curls were falling out faster than my body could replace it.
I tried taking vitamins and iron supplements to strengthen my hair and promote hair growth, but to no avail.
It was time to opt for a more natural way of fixing my hair problem.
I tried various do-it-yourself hair treatments that included tea, coffee, lemon juice, but none of them worked. I was just about to give up when last year I came across an article on Huffington Post about the benefits of putting potato juice on your head.
“The starches in the vegetable act as a natural colorant, and have been used as a dye alternative for fabrics for centuries,” Sabrina Perkins, the author of the article, wrote.
I thought it was hogwash, but I gave it a try, and now a year later, I’m so glad that I tried it!
Here’s what you need to get started:
- 4 cups of hot water
- 6 potatoes
- Mesh strainer
- Essential oil (optional)
- Clean bowl
- Peel six potatoes, and add the skins to a pot filled with four cups of water. Boil them for 25 minutes. Then turn off, and let it sit for 15 minutes.
- Strain the liquid into your clean bowl and throw out the peels.
- Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and let the potato juice cool down.
- When you’re taking a shower, wash your hair the way you usually do. Then, part it, and coat it with the cooled-down potato juice.
- Massage that liquid onto your scalp for a few minutes, before you rinse it out with cold water. If you want to keep it on longer, put a shower cap over the mixture and then rinse it out before you go to bed.
A lot of my friends who have tried this give up after a few applications. Keep in mind, you have to apply this mixture to your hair often, at least once a week, especially if you have a lot of gray hairs.
If you’re looking to strengthen your hair, give it shine, or fix that bald spot that’s been bothering you for ages now, occasionally applying this mixture onto your hair will do wonders!
