In this adorable video, a husky momma-dog plays with her pups. She playfully leaps on and off the couch, spins around and runs in and out of the room, goading her young brood to give chase. She makes as if she were going to attack them, and has a delightful back-and-forth with her puppies that is bound to put a smile on your face.
As charming as this video is, it’s more than just a video of dogs playing. Mom is teaching her pups important socialization skills. Between four to twelve weeks of age, puppies are like sponges of information. This is when they most rapidly learn about the world and how to interact with it. Here we see that mom is showing them what playful chase looks like, and what kinds of attack poses are just a part of fun.
Having positive interactions with both humans and other dogs during this phase is important during this critical time. Due to the timing of puppy vaccinations, and when puppies naturally ween, many breeders recommend keeping a litter together until at least 8 or 10 weeks to allow puppies to safely get dog interactions. Based on what we are seeing here, these puppies are bound to be excellent playmates for any dog they meet.
