“Rules for thee, but not for me” is the phrase being widely echoed online after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was mocked on social media for drinking from plastic cups while attending Coachella with girlfriend Katy Perry.

Trudeau faced a wave of criticism after footage shared by the pop star showed the pair enjoying drinks from red Solo cups during the celebrity-packed music festival in Indio, California.

The backlash intensified given Trudeau’s previous push to ban single-use plastics in Canada during his time in office, with critics accusing him of hypocrisy over the

apparent contradiction.

Social media users were quick to call out Justin Trudeau, with critics resurfacing his past environmental policies.

“Remember when Justin Trudeau banned plastic bags and straws for Canadians to ‘save the planet’? Now he’s posting pics using Solo cups. Rules for thee, but not for me,” one user wrote on X.

Another commenter was more blunt, saying, “This a–hole is drinking out of a plastic cup after banning them for the entire country.”

The backlash comes as Trudeau, who spearheaded Canada’s 2019 ban on single-use plastics during his time in office, faces accusations of hypocrisy over the viral Coachella moment.

Although Canada’s ban on single-use plastics covers a broad range of items, it does not extend to all types of plastic cups.

Even so, the online reaction was swift after the footage of Trudeau began circulating on social media.

“Justin Trudeau, Jun. 10, 2019: I’m banning Canadians from using single-use plastics! Justin Trudeau, Apr. 12, 2026: Look at me smash booze from a Solo cup at Coachella!” one user posted on X.

Another wrote, “All I see is plastic cups. Someone banned them up here in Canada. Who was that again?”

The former politician was labeled a hypocrite online after footage shared by his popstar partner showed the pair sipping drinks from red Solo cups over the weekend.

“What’s with the plastic red cups Trudeau and his weirdo girlfriend are using? Trudeau said plastic was evil and toxic,” one critic wrote.

Trudeau stepped down as prime minister in early 2025, more than a year after announcing his separation from his wife of 18 years, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau.

He later went public with the 41-year-old singer last October.
