Students know her as the woman who puts lunch on their tray. But after a captivating karaoke performance, they might hold the lunch lady in a new light.
At Souderton High School in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, 52-year-old Becky Alderfer brought the house down with a rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The regular cafeteria banter quickly turned into bustling applause as Alderfer hit every note imaginable.
“I think it surprised them that the lunch lady started singing,” Alderfer told NBC Philadelphia.
But for friends and coworkers of Alderfer, the stellar performance likely didn’t come as a surprise. You see, for the past three decades and change, Alderfer has been the music director at Family Worship Center in Lansdale – her father’s church. She’s been sharing her talents with the world for years and years, but this was the first time students got to see.
Despite her affinity for all things music, Alderfer told NBC that she still gets butterflies prior to performing. “I can count on my hand how many times I’ve done karaoke,” she explained, “It’s a little nerve-racking.”
Cameron Zettlemoyer, presumably a student at Souderton High School, uploaded the minute-long clip to YouTube on December 22. It’s since been viewed nearly 250,000 times.
Zettlemoyer joked, “She declined autographs following her performance, and had to be escorted through the crowd of screaming fans to return to washing trays.”
