You don’t need expert sewing skills to make this adorable puff quilt. If you have a sewing machine and can sew a straight line, you can do this project. Audra Kurtz of the Kurtz Corner YouTube channel shows you how.

Kurtz recommends this 32-by-32-inch square quilt for use as a lap quilt or a child’s play mat. If you’re interested in making a full-size puff quilt, check out this tutorial from Astar’s Place.

Note that in the beginning of the video, Kurtz gets some of her numbers wrong, but she provides corrections. The quilt contains 64 puffs total in a square of eight puffs by eight puffs.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Puff pattern fabric: Cut into squares of 5 by 5 inches, 64 squares total (Kurtz uses six different fabrics, three of them cut into 10 squares each, two cut into 11 squares each, and one cut into 12 squares)

Plain backing fabric: Cut into squares of 4 by 4 inches, 64 squares total

Four side pieces: Cut into rectangles of 36 by 7 inches

One backing piece: Cut into a square of 34 by 34 inches

Polyester fiber filling

Kurtz leads you step by step to make the 64 “little ravioli puffs,” as she calls them. Sew each 5-by-5 patterned fabric square onto a 4-by-4 backing square, folding and sewing a single pleat on each side of the patterned fabric to make it fit evenly over the backing. Sew three sides, stuff with poly fill, then sew the fourth side to seal.

Lay out your puffs in a pattern in an eight-by-eight square. One row at a time, sew each row of eight puffs together. Sew the rows together, being careful to align all seams.

Sew the 36-by-7 side pieces to the puff square. Trim the overlapping fabric in the corners, leaving enough seam allowance, before sewing the corners together all the way to the edge of the quilt. Sew on your backing. Kurtz adds an extra touch by combining extra fabric from the puffs to create long strips to sew on the edges as a border.

This colorful handmade quilt makes a great gift, and it’s so easy to personalize with any colors and fabric patterns you choose.
