Each and every person celebrates Christmas in a different way. For some, the meaning of Christmas is about giving gifts, for others, it’s about presents, and then some people just love the festive fun. However, the Gaither Vocal Band want to spread their Christmas cheer through music and togetherness.
The Gaither Vocal Band have been a popular favorite for their strong vocals and powerful Christian messages in their music. But there’s one song that really stands out to us and it’s truly spectacular.
Songwriter and comedian, Mark Lowry, wrote a beautiful Christmas song that celebrates the religious aspect of the holiday. Mark, one of the members of Gaither Vocal Band, spent over 7 years perfecting the lyrics to his powerful song, ‘Mary, Did You Know?‘
Mark Lowry wrote ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ over a 7 year period to make sure it was just right
The idea for the song came to him while he was writing a Christmas program for Jerry Falwell in 1984. Mark started to think about what he would like to ask Mary if she was sitting right in front of him. He wondered how she would have felt during her pregnancy and so he penned the song that we all know and love today.
‘Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God’
When Mark finished penning the lyrics in 1991, he asked his friend, Buddy Greene, to put music to the words. Buddy composed the song in just half an hour and ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ was born.
Since its recording, the song has gone on to become a modern Christmas classic. In fact, it’s been covered by countless artists over the years. And it’s not hard to see why. It is a stunning song.
