Going to the airport is hardly the most enjoyable or relaxing of events. Despite the planning and preparation that goes into airport trips, the occasion can still evoke feelings of stress, anxiety, and in some cases, fear. Needless to say, even the slightest hint of fun or entertainment at an airport is like a breath of fresh air to the weary traveller.
On November 19, 2014, customers at the Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport in Poland received more than just a breath of fresh air when they passed through the facility. In celebration of LOT Polish Airlines’ success, the airline publicly rewarded the half-millionth passenger to purchase a ticket for their Boeing 787 Dreamliner, as described by the Warsaw Chopin Airport website.
According to the airport’s site, the lucky passenger was Maciej Kołodziej who purchased a flight from Warsaw to New York. The video below begins with footage of Kołodziej checking in at the Warsaw airport just before the airline’s surprise is set to unfold. Instead of subtly passing off a reward to their half-millionth passenger, LOT Airlines made a spectacle of the momentous occasion by breaking into song.
Under the guise of airport customer service agents, performers from the ROMA Music Theatre staged a flash mob to celebrate their half-millionth flier, as described by Travel Industry Today. The artists performed an animated rendition of “Mamma Mia” in Polish for a very taken-aback Kołodziej, and a group of curious bystanders who stopped to watch.
Warsaw Chopin Airport also explains that in addition to the flash mob performance, Kołodziej also received a cake, an upgrade to LOT Business Class, an invitation to ROMA’s premiere of “Mamma Mia” in Polish, and other airline gifts.
