Photographer Jacquelyn Martin saw a homeless man huddled in a blanket one cold winter day. She noticed how young he was and knew that a photograph of him would make for a powerful image.

“I introduced myself and shook his hand, and he would only say that his name was ‘Nick,’” Jacquelyn told CBS. When his photo was used in a USA Today article, a woman named Michelle Simmons recognized him. The young man was her son.

Nick, or 20-year-old Nicholas A. Simmons, had been missing for four days, he left behind his coat, wallet, and cell phone and car. The family and Rochester police began searching for him, but there was no luck. Police took Nick to George Washington University Hospital, where he was reunited with his family. We’ve seen a story like this before: photographer Diana Kim found her father while photographing the homeless.

“Nick is alive and obviously not well. We are going to get him home safe and this is by far the greatest example of God’s love and divine intervention I have ever experienced… God took that photo, God made us find him… It could have been months before we had a lead on his whereabouts. My baby looks so lost and I will be spending the rest of my life making him well,” Michelle said. While the mother declined to comment on what led Nick astray, she is just happy to have him back.
