This past weekend, the police department in Bloomingdale, IL responded to a concerned phone call. The officers had no idea that what came next would quickly go viral. A 21-year-old mentally disabled woman had wandered away from home and got lost. Officers found her walking along the side of the road, visibly scared and distraught. However, the woman refused to go with police — that was, until Officer Michael Giovenco helped her out.

The woman told Officer Giovenco that she just wanted to “walk the trails.” Without questioning, the kindhearted cop, who has only been with the police department since March 2015, told her he would gladly walk the trails with her. After a few minutes, the officer had gained her trust, and the woman agreed to let him walk her all the way home. He held her hand the entire way, which seemed to put her even more at ease. The officers who followed behind the pair took out their camera and recorded the simple yet heartwarmingjourney home, then posted it to their Facebook page.

In just a couple of days, the following footage has been shared thousands of times. With all the negative headlines surrounding police officers these days, it’s so refreshing to see those men and women who dedicate themselves to serving and protecting.
