It’s almost unimaginable to think that a new parent would reject their own baby. But the sad truth is that it happens sometimes. For both humans and animals.
A few months ago, a Chinese father tried to kill his own child because the baby was born intersex. But thankfully he is being punished accordingly. Animals on the other hand do not get punished for rejecting their own offspring.
And when Dragon, the rare white-faced fawn, came into this world a few months ago, his mother rejected him on the spot. Because he looked different…
Born at Deer Tracks Junction in Cedar Springs, Michigan, the fawn’s mother rejected him because he had a skin condition. Besides that he also suffered from a series of other congenital health defects that accompanied the skin abnormality. And mom just wasn’t willing to take the risk on her different looking baby.
So mom rejected her baby and left him to die…
But thankfully this white-faced fawn was accepted into another family. And since his new human parents have adopted Dragon, he is doing remarkably well despite being dealt a bad hand at birth.
In the video below, you’ll get to see Dragon himself as his family, who lives and works on a Michigan farm, takes him in to WOOD TV8.
So how did it all work out for Dragon?
Well as Kelly Powell, of the Deer Tracks Junction describes, Dragon was one of two. That’s right he has a twin. But Dragon’s sibling does not have a white face.
Because the deer has a white face, blue eyes, his mother rejected him. If it wasn’t for human intervention, he would have died in the wild.
Now Dragon gets fed four times per day while he thrives at Deer Tracks Junction.
“It does happen from time to time,” deer expert Powell said. “An animal in the wild isn’t going to waste its energy raising an unhealthy fawn or child. But it does happen and we try to be there. If need be, we take them in and as you see, he is doing well.”
But since his initial rejection at birth, Dragon has been a famous and sought after little guy. And he loves all the attention. As you can see in the clip, the animal handler keeps petting him and feeding him and he loves every second of it.
Here’s what some people said in reaction to the video. Would love to hear your take, though…
- “The handler was touching the heck outta him. You’d think a deer, even a baby one, wouldn’t be interested in a massage. Seemed to be contributing to riling him up vs relaxing. Just my observation. Awfully cute defect! Sweet!”
- “I would take dragon home in a second. Who could say no to that cute face”
Deer Tracks Junction offers wildlife tours and visitors had the chance to meet Dragon in person. As their website describes, visitors “get to see all of our Adult Whitetail deer, Elk, Reindeer, and Tibetan Yaks. Depending on which animals are cooperating, you will get off and pet and feed some of them during your tour, as well.”
What do you think about the white-faced fawn? Isn’t he just adorable?
