“I crouched down holding my face, but he grabbed me with both hands and lifted me up by my hair before throwing me into the door.

“I felt dizzy, I had no energy but then he strangled me to the point where I couldn’t breathe.

“Every bit of energy I had in my body was fighting for oxygen and I could see in his face he was not going to stop.

“I thought to myself ‘do what you want to me because I’m tired of fighting.’”

Courtney eventually managed to kick Akester between the legs and glee the flat to call police.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting her twice and causing damage to the flat at Hull Magistrates’ Court.

The couple met at school and started dating two years ago.

Akester became “possessive, controlling and jealous” when barmaid Courtney got attention from other men.

She said: “There was a good side to him – an amazing side to him – which you could not help but love but there was an evil side too.

“He started being nasty and vulgar towards me, saying my body was a mess and that no one would ever love me or want me. He mentally abused me and I started to believe it.

“I started becoming self-conscious and it got to the stage where I was uncomfortable to take my own clothes off when I was in bed with him.”

Akester smashed up their flat on May 19 when she tried to move out.

Two days later he launched into another attack which left her fearing for her life.

Akester pleaded guilty to assault and was given a three-year restraining order and ordered to complete 20 days of rehab.

He did not have to pay any victim surcharge.

Furious Courtney said: “I don’t think it’s fair and I don’t think he has been punished in the right way.

“I wanted him to be given something that would scare him but he has got away with it so lightly.

Now, with Courtney recovering from the most arduous incident of her young life, she’s sent a message to her tormentor. Rather than insulting him, she’s chosen to thank him.

“I thank him for making me a strong person and I hope one day he will grow up and change who he is,” she said.
