“I never had any friends later on, like the ones I had when I was twelve.” That quote, I think, speaks to all of us. Most people have the best and sweetest friends they ever will when they are just kids. Zac and Vincent, two first graders, are proving my point:
Zac Gossage wasn’t even in first grade when he fell ill. It was June when his parents discovered he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Once in school, he had to undergo multiple medical procedures for treatment. He didn’t take days off, though. He wanted to play with his best friend, Vincent, too much.

When Vincent realized Zac was sick, he began asking questions. He realized that the treatments were expensive.

So, he did what a loving best friend would do: he tried to raise money for Zac by selling scarves. He raised over $200.

Not only that, but one day Vincent showed up to school with a shaved head. He said he didn’t want Zac feeling weird for having one, so he wanted one, too.

Basically, Vincent showed the world that a best friend can be one of the most healing and wonderful things in the world.
As we grow older, we lose the drive to be kindhearted and completely selfless like Vincent Butterfield. Let’s not forget to try to be good friends to those we love.
