When John Mullins was hospitalized at the Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, VA, in late 2015, he asked staff for one request: to have his wife Bernice by his side.

The World War II veteran (92 at the time) was in the hospital for weeks before his wife was admitted to the same facility for surgery.

His wish was granted, since Bernice (two years younger) was able to be moved from her hospital room. Once they were placed in the same room, John and Bernice, who wed in 1945 and had three children together, shared a heartwarming moment that will make any romantic smile.

Mr. Mullins’ personal care aide Chyenne Marion took a photo of the elderly couple holding hands as they stared at each other. Like the elderly Utah couple who sang to each other during the husband’s hospital stay, it was simply unforgettable.

“They were together about an hour or two holding hands and sleeping,” Marion told Virginia’s WTVR. “I was crying and all other nurses were crying. It was like a real-life The Notebook.”

Although Marion took the photo to share with their family members, it reached far more viewers, who were just as touched by the moment. WTVR shared it on its Facebook page, and it was shared more than 1,000 times.

Unfortunately, Mr. Mullins passed away about a month later, and the family started a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses since the couple didn’t have any savings.

See the photo below and please SHARE if you’re blown away by their love!

“Next month Mr. and Mrs. Mullins will celebrate their 71st wedding anniversary. This month they are in Johnston Willis Hospital for different reasons. Recently nurses and doctors were able to bring Mrs. Mullins into her husband’s room so they could fall asleep holding hands. Get well soon young couple,” the news station wrote on its Facebook page at the time the photo was taken.
