One day, Ashley Yasick got a strange phone call from a wrong number. She didn’t recognize the call, so she let it go straight to voicemail. She immediately listened to it and knew she couldn’t ignore what the stranger needed.
“It was one of those gut-wrenching phone calls, and I knew right away I couldn’t ignore it,” Ashley told the SunSentinel’s Maria Herrera. “I called him back. Clearly he was trying to reach out to somebody.”
The call was from 84-year-old Thomas Buck, who was literally 1,000 miles away in Pennsylvania — Ashley was in Florida. The call was intended for his daughter. Thomas was dizzy and had fallen a few times, and he needed immediate help. Ashley decided to act. She called the number back and asked Thomas where he was. The distressed man only said he was in the back of his house. Ashley decided to search the man’s number on Google, which yielded his address. She called 911, and they were on their way.
“I said, ‘This is going to sound really weird, but there’s a man I don’t know who may need help,’” Ashley told the dispatcher. The paramedics arrived where it was discovered Thomas has a blood infection. Had Ashley not called 911, he could have died; but thanks to her, he is on his way to recovering.
“I was just following my instinct. In my gut, I knew he needed help,” she said.
