You’re probably seeing colorful baskets, plastic eggs and pastel foil wrapped chocolates when you go grocery shopping. Yes folks, it’s already Easter.

Although the holiday is most commonly associated with the Christian celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, many of the symbols and traditions used during this time of year predate Christianity. For many cultures, the egg is a symbol of new life and fertility. In Christian religions, the egg represents new life and an empty tomb. Eastern Orthodox churches dye eggs red to symbolize the blood of christ, but ancient Sumerians and Egyptians also decorated eggs to be placed at graves.

Whatever the traditional reasons, egg decorating is a lot of fun. It’s a great activity to do with kids of any age. If you are not artistically inclined, this little trick by Modern Mom will help you create eye-catching eggs with little effort. Try experimenting with just dropping some food coloring right onto the egg for a splotchy effect.
