When people are faced with heartbreaking loss and tragedy, like this man left to raise his baby alone after his wife’s untimely passing, it can be difficult to see past the pain. But a person canrise above their own heartbreak and uplift people. Roger Leggett did just that and is proving to be an inspiration to both his family — and complete strangers.
Just weeks after Leggett’s four-year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor, his only son Chad died of heat stroke. He was devastated. While mourning the tragic loss of his son, Leggett decided to heal his heart with a a new project — building red wagons for kids at The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
The idea was created months prior while Felicity was in brain surgery, and Chad was still alive. Leggett recalled being in the hospital when he saw a woman carrying her child into the elevator in the red wagon with his IV pole following behind.
“The lady was carrying her child into this elevator and almost dumped the IV cart on the child that has obviously just had surgery. Chad looked at me and said ‘There’s gotta be a better way to do that,’ ” Leggett told USA Today.
The rest, as they say, is history. To date, Leggett has helped convert over 100 red wagons that carry the IV poles. He’s even created a special one for his granddaughter Felicity, now seven years old, so “Paw Paw” can take her on a ride around the hospital. Not long after Leggett completed the wagons, he and his family received the news they’d been praying for: Felicity is in remission.
