Malissa Sergent Lewis was running late to work. To make it quickly to the elementary school where she works, she took a shortcut through the quiet, remote backroads of Kentucky.
It was then and there that she made a startling discovery, and one that changed the course of her life.
The mother of three spotted a black trash bag in the middle of the street. Even from a distance, she could tell the bag was moving and shifting. There was definitely something inside.
The closer she got, the more it seemed like whatever was in that bag was trying to walk its way across the road. Malissa pulled out her cellphone as she slowly drove up to the bag.
The creature inside could sense Malissa’s presence, and started walking over towards her on the concrete as best it could.
It didn’t matter that it could have been a dangerous animal — Malissa tore into the bag anyway, disregarding the knot tied tightly at the top.
But when Malissa peeked inside, she couldn’t believe her eyes…
On the morning of August 25, 2016, Malissa Sergent Lewis decided to take the backroads to work at her elementary school in Kentucky.
She never expected to make such a shocking discovery.
Malissa spotted a trash bag in the middle of the road. “The closer I got, I realized it was moving,” she told The Dodo.
She pulled out her cellphone to hit record. Whatever it was, she decided right then and there that she was going to get it out.
Sensing someone was close, the creature inside the bag started eagerly walking its way toward Malissa as she hopped out of her car to inspect.
It could have easily been an angry possum or some other dangerous animal, but that didn’t stop her from tearing into the bag and peeking inside…
…And there was a puppy. An adorable, grateful and incredibly lucky puppy.
As soon as he saw Malissa’s face, he began wagging his tail. Malissa says it was if he knew he was going to be okay.
Malissa took to Facebook to post her shocking video, along with a message: “If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road…..you’re a sicko”
The puppy was wearing a collar, but had no identification. Malissa scooped him up and took him to work with her.
That evening, Malissa and her sons took the puppy to the vet for shots and an examination. Miraculously, he was healthy!
The vet said he couldn’t be more than 8 weeks old. It’s a complete mystery as to why this happened… and why someone would do this.
Animal Control and the Sheriff’s Department are looking into who could have possibly committed this horrible act.
Meanwhile, Malissa and her sons have decided to keep the puppy. She says her sons are absolutely in love with him.
Fittingly, they’ve named him Hefty.
“He is playful,” Malissa told LittleThings. “We were just talking about how resilient he was. He romps around playing with his new toys. He’s good natured. Even the day that I brought him into the school where I work the day I found him, he was precious. The guidance counselor, Mrs. Kelly is a big animal lover, she took the pup to visit second grade and the kids loved him.”
Not only was Malissa in the right place at the right time to discover Hefty, but she was exactly the right person to drive by at that very moment.
Other people might not have given the trash bag a second glance. Or they might have just ignored it and continued on their way.
But not Malissa — she followed her instincts and took a major risk — and look at the incredible miracle she’s been given in return.
