Ever since Darlene Love was a teenager, she was immersed in the life of a performer. Discovered while singing with her local church choir, she was invited to sing with a girl group called the Blossoms, which skyrocketed her as a singer. She’s collaborated with the best, including Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, and Sonny and Cher. Her voice just seems to float effortlessly through the air, and everyone loves to listen to her.
In 1986, she went on David Letterman’s late-night TV show for the last episode before Christmas. Little did she know that it would become a treasured holiday tradition until Letterman retired in 2014. Letterman himself named Love’s annual rendition of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” his favorite part of the holiday. Surely, the same goes for tons of people who’ve welcomed her into their living rooms via television broadcasts throughout the decades.
Watching Love perform the same song so flawlessly over so many years is almost unbelievable. Not only does she not seem to age physically, but her voice never begins to waver in its strength. This woman is a true powerhouse, and we’re all lucky to have her as an entertainer in our time! Oh, and make sure to wait for 1:31… you’ll definitely get a giggle out of this!
This performance is Letterman’s favorite Christmas tradition, but what’s yours? It’s important to have something like this to look forward to with family and friends.
Please SHARE Love’s performances over the years to remind those that you love what Christmas is all about!
